Lonsdale: Raw Meaty Bones p. 330: "I suggest that one or two days each week your pets be fasted - just like animals in the wild."
Schultze: Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats p. 39: "Generally speaking, normal, non-pregnant, non-lactating adult dogs and acts over one year of age should eat one meal per day, six days per week. One day per week is a fast day"
Billinghurst: ik heb z'n boeken uitgeleend maar op de website staat: "The point I am making in regard to this discussion is that to produce the dog, our ancestors made only two basic changes to the wolf.
They changed the wolf's appearance and they changed its mind. What they did not change, was the basic internal workings or or physiology of the wolf. There was no need to. As a result, the basic workings or physiology of modern dogs is no different or very little different to their ancestor the wolf. Modern dogs grow and function (and malfunction) in very much the same way as the wolf. ...
The basic environment which the modern dog requires in terms of food and exercise is exactly the same as it was (and still is) for the wolf....
Wolves ... may eat once a day or five or six times a day, depending on the season and what sort of food is available. They have days when they go hungry. They have days when they pile food into themselves almost beyond capacity. They eat when food is available, and as the urge takes them."
Elisasen: Raw Food for Dogs p. 77 ff geeft de meest uitgebreide uitleg over het wat, hoe en waarom van max. 1x per dag voeren en vasten.
"Fast days and why your dog needs them.
You need to understand that your dog's stomach and intestines will take about 20-24 hours to digest a full meal. A "full meal" meaning: a meal that will fill the stomach to its capacity, as a carnivore naturally will do
when it gets the opportunity. Compare that to your stomach that will digest a normal meal in 3-4 hours...
This basically means that your stomach will be empty most of the night when you sleep, unless you eat supper right before bedtime. Even if you do, your
stomach will still get at least 6 hours rest before you eat breakfast ("breakfast" actually means "breaking the fast"...). In a 24-hour period, your stomach then gets at least 25% rest time every day. What about the dog, then? Well, when a meal takes a full day to digest, it
makes no sense to feed your dog any more than maximum once a day. But that still leaves its stomach with no rest whatsoever! Giving it 25% of the time to rest means feeding only three days out of every four. You might want to stretch this to once a week (six days out of seven), and mathematically you would not be wrong, considering the principal uncertainty of these
numbers. (It would actually make more sense, though, to give the dog at least two fast days per week, using this human standard....) However, when we take into account that the dog is a carnivore and not a monkey, logic will make the number of fast days go even higher....
The dog’s stomach can only rest if you give the dog a fast day."
